So when I intended this, did I act lightly? Or do I make my plans according to human considerations, so that with me it is “yes, yes” and “no, no”?

But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted from a sincere [and pure] commitment to Christ.

For we are not like the many who trade on the word of God; but as out of sincerity, indeed as from God and in the presence of God, we speak in Christ.

Rather, we have renounced shameful, hidden things; not acting deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

I say this not by way of command, but to test the genuineness of your love by your concern for others.

Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else;

So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate,

to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers.

The aim of this instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.

showing yourself as a model of good deeds in every respect, with integrity in your teaching, dignity,

Pray for us, for we are confident that we have a clear conscience, wishing to act rightly in every respect.

But he bestows a greater grace; therefore, it says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
