The woman whose son was alive, because she was stirred with compassion for her son, said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby—do not kill it!” But the other said, “It shall be neither mine nor yours. Cut it in two!”

With that, Joseph hurried out, for he was so overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge of tears. So he went into a private room and wept there.

he said, “Cut the living child in two, and give half to one woman and half to the other.”

The king then answered, “Give her the living baby! Do not kill it! She is the mother.”

Mute and silent before the wicked, I refrain from good things. But my sorrow increases;

Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

Is Ephraim not my favored son, the child in whom I delight? Even though I threaten him, I must still remember him! My heart stirs for him, I must show him compassion!—oracle of the Lord.

How could I give you up, Ephraim, or deliver you up, Israel? How could I treat you as Admah, or make you like Zeboiim? My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred.

They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy,

callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating what is good,

If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him?
