Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples),

He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom.

And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.

For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with the simplicity and sincerity of God, [and] not by human wisdom but by the grace of God.

For someone will say, “His letters are severe and forceful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.”

Even if I am untrained in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.

Rather, we have renounced shameful, hidden things; not acting deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.
