The LORDwas sorrythat He had mademanon the earth,and He was grievedin His heart.
"They sayto God,Departfrom us! We do not even desirethe knowledgeof Your ways.
The fearof the LORDis the beginningof knowledge;Foolsdespisewisdomand instruction.
Why,O LORD,do You cause us to strayfrom Your waysAnd hardenour heartfrom fearingYou? Returnfor the sakeof Your servants,the tribesof Your heritage.
Thussaysthe LORDto thispeople,"Even sothey have lovedto wander;they have not kepttheir feetin check.Therefore the LORDdoes not acceptthem; nowHe will remembertheir iniquityand calltheir sinsto account."
"Your dwellingis in the midstof deceit;Through deceitthey refuseto knowMe," declaresthe LORD.
"So the LORD'Sangerburnedagainst Israel,and He made them wanderin the wildernessfortyyears,untilthe entiregenerationof those who had doneevilin the sightof the LORDwas destroyed.
"For a periodof aboutforty yearsHe putup with them in the wilderness.
"This manledthem out, performingwondersand signsin the landof Egyptand in the RedSeaand in the wildernessfor fortyyears.
And justas they did not see fitto acknowledgeGodany longer, Godgave them overto a depravedmind,to dothosethings which are not proper,
Do not grievethe HolySpiritof God,by whomyou were sealedfor the dayof redemption.
In the fortiethyear,on the first[day] of the eleventhmonth,Mosesspoketo the childrenof Israel,according to allthat the LORDhad commandedhim [to give] to them,
And with whomwas He angryfor fortyyears?Was it not with thosewhosinned,whosebodiesfellin the wilderness?
