The Levites,however, were not numberedamongthem by their fathers'tribe.

from twentyyearsoldand upward,whoever[is able to] goout to warin Israel,you and Aaronshall numberthem by their armies.
For the LORDhad spokento Moses,saying,
"But you shall appointthe Levitesoverthe tabernacleof the testimony,and overallits furnishingsand overallthat belongs to it. They shall carrythe tabernacleand allits furnishings,and they shall takecareof it; they shall also camparoundthe tabernacle.
The Levites,however, were not numberedamongthe sonsof Israel,justas the LORDhad commandedMoses.
Now theseare [the records of] the generationsof Aaronand Mosesat the timewhen the LORDspokewith Moseson MountSinai.
Then the LORDspoketo Mosesin the wildernessof Sinai,saying,
"Numberthe sonsof Leviby their fathers'households,by their families;everymalefrom a montholdand upwardyou shall number."
Accordingto the commandmentof the LORDthroughMoses,they were numbered,everyoneby his servingor carrying;thus [these were] his numberedmen, justas the LORDhad commandedMoses.
