They began to discuss[this] amongthemselves,saying,"[He said that] becausewe did not bring[any] bread."
"The baptismof Johnwas from what[source], from heavenorfrom men?"And they [began] reasoningamongthemselves,saying,"Ifwe say,'From heaven,'He will sayto us, 'Thenwhydid you not believehim?'
"Was the baptismof Johnfrom heavenorfrom men?"
"But ifwe say,'From men,'allthe peoplewill stone us to death,for they are convincedthat Johnwas a prophet."
"Thisis He on behalfof whomI said,Afterme comesa Manwhohasa higher rankthan I, for He existedbeforeme.'
"I myselfhave seen,and have testifiedthat thisis the Sonof God."
And they cameto Johnand saidto him, "Rabbi,He whowas with you beyondthe Jordan,to whomyou have testified,behold,He is baptizingand allare comingto Him."
"He who believesin the Sonhaseternallife;but he who does not obeythe Sonwill not seelife,but the wrathof Godabideson him."
"And whileJohnwas completinghis course,he kept saying,'Whatdo you supposethat I am?I amnot [He]. But behold,one is comingafterme the sandalsof whosefeetI amnot worthyto untie.'
