When Joshuaand allIsraelsawthat the [men in] ambushhad capturedthe cityand that the smokeof the cityascended,they turnedbackand slewthe menof Ai.
Now when Joabsawthat the battlewas set againsthim in frontand in the rear,he selectedfrom allthe choicemen of Israel,and arrayed[them] againstthe Arameans.
Now it cameabout when Adoni-zedekkingof Jerusalemheardthat Joshuahad capturedAi,and had utterlydestroyedit (justas he had doneto Jerichoand its king,sohe had doneto Aiand its king),and that the inhabitantsof Gibeonhad madepeacewith Israeland were withintheir land,
When the menof Aiturnedbackand looked,behold,the smokeof the cityascendedto the sky,and they hadnoplaceto fleethiswayor that, for the peoplewho had been fleeingto the wildernessturnedagainstthe pursuers.
The otherscameout from the cityto encounterthem, so that they were [trapped] in the midstof Israel,someon thissideand someon that side;and they slewthem untilnoone was leftof those whosurvivedor escaped.
