Then Joshuamade them takean oathat that time,saying,"Cursedbeforethe LORDis the manwhorisesup and buildsthiscityJericho;with [the loss of] his firstbornhe shall layits foundation,and with [the loss of] his youngestsonhe shall setup its gates."
In his daysHielthe BethelitebuiltJericho;he laidits foundationswith the [loss of] Abiramhis firstborn,and setup its gateswith the [loss of] his youngestson Segub,according to the wordof the LORD,whichHe spokeby Joshuathe sonof Nun.
Then the kingsaidto him, "Howmanytimesmust I adjureyou to speakto me nothingbut the truthin the nameof the LORD?"
Elijahsaidto him, "Elisha,pleasestayhere,for the LORDhas sentme to Jericho."But he said,"As the LORDlives,and as you yourselflive,I will not leaveyou." So they cameto Jericho.
ThoughEdomsays,"We have been beatendown,but we will returnand buildup the ruins";thussaysthe LORDof hosts,"They may build,but I will teardown;and [men] will callthem the wickedterritory,and the peopletoward whomthe LORDis indignantforever."
But Jesuskept silent.And the high priestsaidto Him, "I adjureYou by the livingGod,that You tellus whetherYou are the Christ,the Sonof God."
But alsosomeof the Jewishexorcists,who went from place to place,attemptedto nameoverthosewho hadthe evilspiritsthe nameof the LordJesus,saying,"I adjureyou by JesuswhomPaulpreaches."
It wentdownfrom Janoahto Atarothand to Naarah,then reachedJerichoand cameout at the Jordan.
