"Pleaseinquireof pastgenerations,And considerthe thingssearchedout by their fathers.
Then KingRehoboamconsultedwith the elderswhohadservedhis fatherSolomonwhile he was still alive,saying,"Howdo you counsel[me] to answerthispeople?"
"Wisdomis with agedmen,[With] longlifeis understanding.
"Behold,my eyehas seenall[this], My earhas heardand understoodit.
"Boththe gray-hairedand the agedare among us, Olderthanyour father.
Whatwisemenhave told,And have not concealedfrom their fathers,
"Do you knowthisfrom of old,From the establishmentof manon earth,
O God,we have heardwith our ears,Our fathershave toldus The workthat You didin their days,In the daysof old.
"It is the livingwho givethanksto You, as I do today;A fathertellshis sonsaboutYour faithfulness.
Hearthis,O elders,And listen,allinhabitantsof the land.Has [anything like] thishappenedin your daysOrin your fathers'days?
For whateverwas written in earlier timeswas writtenfor our instruction,sothat throughperseveranceand the encouragementof the Scriptureswe might havehope.
Nowthese thingshappenedto them as an example,and they were writtenfor our instruction,upon whomthe endsof the ageshave come.
"Rememberthe daysof old,Considerthe yearsof allgenerations.Askyour father,and he will informyou, Your elders,and they will tellyou.
"Indeed,asknowconcerning the formerdayswhichwere beforeyou, sincethe daythat Godcreatedmanon the earth,and [inquire] from one endof the heavensto the other.Has [anything] been donelike thisgreatthing,orhas [anything] been heardlikeit?
