While he was at the Gateof Benjamin,a captainof the guardwhose namewas Irijah,the sonof Shelemiahthe sonof Hananiahwas there;and he arrestedJeremiahthe prophet,saying,"You are goingoverto the Chaldeans!"
Then they said,"Comeand let us deviseplansagainstJeremiah.Surelythe lawis not going to be lostto the priest,norcounselto the sage,northe [divine] wordto the prophet!Comeon and let us strikeat him with [our] tongue,and let us givenoheedto anyof his words."
For I have heardthe whisperingof many,"Terroron everyside!Denounce[him]; yes, let us denouncehim!" Allmy trustedfriends,Watchingfor my fall,say: "Perhapshe will be deceived,so that we may prevailagainst him And takeour revengeon him."
Pashhurhad Jeremiahthe prophetbeatenand puthim in the stocksthat were at the upperBenjaminGate,whichwas by the houseof the LORD.
"He who dwellsin thiscitywill dieby the swordand by famineand by pestilence;but he who goesout and fallsawayto the Chaldeanswho are besiegingyou will live,and he will havehis own lifeas booty.
"NowI have givenalltheselandsinto the handof Nebuchadnezzarkingof Babylon,My servant,and I have givenhim alsothe wildanimalsof the fieldto servehim.
For thussaysthe LORDof hosts,the Godof Israel,"I have puta yokeof ironon the neckof allthesenations,that they may serveNebuchadnezzarkingof Babylon;and they will servehim. And I have alsogivenhim the beastsof the field."'"
he wentdownto the king'shouse,into the scribe'schamber.And behold,allthe officialswere sittingthere--Elishamathe scribe,and Delaiahthe sonof Shemaiah,and Elnathanthe sonof Achbor,and Gemariahthe sonof Shaphan,and Zedekiahthe sonof Hananiah,and allthe [other] officials.
Now Shephatiahthe sonof Mattan,and Gedaliahthe sonof Pashhur,and Jucalthe sonof Shelemiah,and Pashhurthe sonof Malchijahheardthe wordsthat Jeremiahwas speakingto allthe people,saying,
Then the officialssaidto the king,"Nowlet thismanbe putto death,inasmuchas he is discouragingthe menof warwho are leftin thiscityand allthe people,by speakingsuchwordsto them; for thismanis not seekingthe well-beingof thispeoplebut rathertheir harm."
But Ebed-melechthe Ethiopian,a eunuch,while he was in the king'spalace,heardthat they had putJeremiahinto the cistern.Now the kingwas sittingin the Gateof Benjamin;
They huntedour stepsSothat we could not walkin our streets;Our enddrewnear,Our dayswere finishedFor our endhad come.
Then Amaziah,the priestof Bethel,sent[word] to Jeroboamkingof Israel,saying,"Amoshas conspiredagainstyou in the midstof the houseof Israel;the landis unableto endureallhis words.
Allthe landwill be changedinto a plainfrom Gebato Rimmonsouthof Jerusalem;but Jerusalem will riseand remainon its sitefrom Benjamin'sGateas faras the placeof the FirstGateto the CornerGate,and from the Towerof Hananelto the king'swinepresses.
And they beganto accuseHim, saying,"We foundthis manmisleadingour nationand forbiddingto paytaxesto Caesar,and sayingthat He Himselfis Christ,a King."
"Norcanthey proveto you [the charges] of whichthey nowaccuseme.
Thenthey secretly inducedmento say,"We have heardhim speakblasphemouswordsagainstMosesand [against] God."
by gloryand dishonor,by evil reportand good report;[regarded] as deceiversand yet true;
