When He enteredthe temple,the chief priestsand the eldersof the peoplecameto Him while He was teaching,and said,"By whatauthorityare You doingthese things,and whogaveYou thisauthority?"
"I knowthat His commandmentis eternallife;thereforethe things I speak,I speakjustas the Fatherhas toldMe."
"Thisis eternallife,that they may knowYou, the onlytrue God,and JesusChristwhomYou have sent.
for the wordswhichYou gaveMe I have givento them; and they received[them] and trulyunderstoodthat I came forthfrom You, and they believedthat You sentMe.
Jesusansweredhim, "I have spokenopenlyto the world;I alwaystaughtin synagoguesand in the temple,whereallthe Jewscome together;and I spokenothingin secret.
"It is the Spiritwho gives life;the fleshprofitsnothing;the wordsthat I have spokento you are spiritand are life.
SimonPeteransweredHim, "Lord,to whomshall we go?You havewordsof eternallife.
and he will speakwordsto you by whichyou will be saved,you and allyour household.'
