They fearedthe LORDand servedtheir own godsaccording to the customof the nationsfrom among whomthey had been carriedawayinto exile.
Elijahcamenearto allthe peopleand said,"Howlong[will] you hesitatebetweentwoopinions?Ifthe LORDis God,followHim; but ifBaal,followhim." But the peopledid not answerhim a word.
They also fearedthe LORDand appointedfrom amongthemselves priestsof the highplaces,who actedfor them in the housesof the highplaces.
To thisdaythey doaccording to the earliercustoms:they do not fearthe LORD,nordo they followtheir statutesor their ordinancesor the law,or the commandmentswhichthe LORDcommandedthe sonsof Jacob,whomHe namedIsrael;
So while thesenationsfearedthe LORD,they also servedtheir idols;their childrenlikewiseand their grandchildren,as their fathersdid,so they doto thisday.
Their heartis faithless;Nowthey must beartheir guilt.The LORD will breakdowntheir altars[And] destroytheir [sacred] pillars.
"And those who bowdownon the housetopsto the hostof heaven,And those who bowdown[and] swearto the LORDand [yet] swearby Milcom,
"No onecanservetwomasters;for eitherhe will hatethe oneand lovethe other,orhe will be devotedto oneand despisethe other.You cannotserveGodand wealth.
"Noservantcanservetwomasters;for eitherhe will hatethe oneand lovethe other,or elsehe will be devotedto oneand despisethe other.You cannotserveGodand wealth."
