"You said,'Behold,you have defeatedEdom.'And your hearthas becomeproudin boasting.Nowstayat home;for whyshould you provoketroubleso that you, even you, would falland Judahwith you?"
But Amaziahwould not listen,for it was from God,that He might deliverthem into the hand[of Joash] becausethey had soughtthe godsof Edom.
But when he becamestrong,his heartwas so proudthat he actedcorruptly,and he was unfaithfulto the LORDhis God,for he enteredthe templeof the LORDto burnincenseon the altarof incense.
But Hezekiahgavenoreturnfor the benefithe received,becausehis heartwas proud;therefore wrathcameon him and on Judahand Jerusalem.
But Neco sentmessengersto him, saying,"Whathave we to do with each other, O Kingof Judah?[I am] not [coming] againstyou todaybut againstthe housewith which I am at war,and Godhas orderedme to hurry.Stopfor your own sake from [interfering with] Godwhois with me, sothat He will not destroyyou."
Through insolencecomesnothingbut strife,But wisdomis with those who receivecounsel.
Pride[goes] beforedestruction,And a haughtyspiritbeforestumbling.
A fool'slipsbringstrife,And his mouthcallsfor blows.
Keepingawayfrom strifeis an honorfor a man,But anyfoolwill quarrel.
[Like] one who takesa dogby the earsIs he who passesby [and] meddleswith strifenot belonging to him.
An arrogantman stirsup strife,But he who trustsin the LORDwill prosper.
Thussaysthe LORD,"Let not a wisemanboastof his wisdom,and let not the mightymanboastof his might,let not a richmanboastof his riches;
"When the multitudeis carriedaway, his heartwill be liftedup, and he will cause tensof thousandsto fall;yet he will not prevail.
"Behold,as for the proudone, His soulis not rightwithin him; But the righteouswill liveby his faith.
"Orwhatking,when he setsout to meetanotherkingin battle,will not firstsit downand considerwhetherhe is strong enoughwith tenthousand[men] to encounterthe one comingagainsthim with twentythousand?
sothat nomanmay boastbeforeGod.
then your heartwill becomeproudand you will forgetthe LORDyour Godwho broughtyou out from the landof Egypt,out of the houseof slavery.
But He givesa greatergrace.Therefore[it] says,"GODIS OPPOSEDTO THE PROUD,BUT GIVESGRACETO THE HUMBLE."
You younger men,likewise,be subjectto [your] elders;and allof you, clotheyourselves with humilitytoward one another,for GODIS OPPOSEDTO THE PROUD,BUT GIVESGRACETO THE HUMBLE.
