AbsalomsetAmasaoverthe armyin placeof Joab.Now Amasawas the sonof a manwhose namewas Ithrathe Israelite,whowentin to Abigailthe daughterof Nahash,sisterof Zeruiah,Joab'smother.
Davidsentthe peopleout, one thirdunder the commandof Joab,one thirdunder the commandof Abishaithe sonof Zeruiah,Joab'sbrother,and one thirdunder the commandof Ittaithe Gittite.And the kingsaidto the people,"I myselfwill surelygoout with you also."
And Adonijahwas afraidof Solomon,and he arose,wentand tookholdof the hornsof the altar.
He had conferredwith Joabthe sonof Zeruiahand with Abiatharthe priest;and followingAdonijahthey helpedhim.
"If,however, a manactspresumptuouslytowardhis neighbor,so as to killhim craftily,you are to takehim [even] from My altar,that he may die.
"You shall makeits hornson its fourcorners;its hornsshall be of one piece with it, and you shall overlayit with bronze.
Vengeanceis Mine, and retribution,In due timetheir footwill slip;For the dayof their calamityis near,And the impendingthingsare hasteningupon them.'
