May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brothers; may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Those who curse you will be cursed, and those who bless you will be blessed.

You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. But when you rebel, you will break his yoke from your neck.

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

He placed garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. The Lord made David victorious wherever he went.

So the Lord raised up Hadad the Edomite as an enemy against Solomon. He was of the royal family in Edom.

Earlier, when David was in Edom, Joab, the commander of the army, had gone to bury the dead and had struck down every male in Edom.

God, You have rejected us; You have broken out against us; You have been angry. Restore us!

When My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens, it will then come down on Edom and on the people I have set apart for destruction.

Who is this coming from Edom in crimson-stained garments from Bozrah — this One who is splendid in His apparel, rising up proudly in His great might? It is I, proclaiming vindication, powerful to save.

In that day I will restore the fallen booth of David: I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,

so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that are called by My name — this is the Lord’s declaration — He will do this.

Look, I will make you insignificant among the nations; you will be deeply despised.

But Edom answered him, “You must not travel through our land, or we will come out and confront you with the sword.”

One who comes from Jacob will rule; he will destroy the city’s survivors.
