I will tell you wise sayings; I will explain mysteries from the past

The disciples came to Jesus and asked him, “Why do you use illustrations when you speak to the people?”

He explained many things to them, using stories as illustrations. “The sower went out to sow,” he began.

When Jesus finished explaining these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,

Jesus left Capernaum and went to the region of Judea and Transjordan. Once again people flocked to see him, and he was teaching them like he always did.

Then Jesus began to speak to them using illustrated stories. “Once there was a man who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to some farmers, and left on a journey.

Jesus continued to teach them, saying, “Beware of religious leaders! They love to walk around in long robes, to be greeted respectfully in the marketplaces.

But Jesus called them over to him. Using illustrations he asked them, “How can Satan throw out Satan?

He told them, “The mystery of God's kingdom has been given to you to understand. But outsiders only have the stories,

“Listen,” he said. “A sower went out to sow.

Then the chief priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and what he had been teaching.
