Once the Sabbath had ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought aromatic ointments so that they could go and anoint Jesus' body.

Then Joseph instructed the physicians who worked for him to embalm his father's body. So the physicians embalmed Israel.

He was buried in the tomb that he had prepared for himself in the City of David. They placed him on a bed full of spices, perfumed oils, and fragrances. Then they made a great fire to honor him.

Meanwhile Jesus was in Bethany, eating a meal at Simon the leper's home. A woman came in with an alabaster jar of very expensive pure nard perfume. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus' head.

She did what she could: she anointed my body in anticipation of my burial.

Some women were watching from a distance including Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and Joses, and Salome.

It was Friday, the day before the Sabbath. When evening came,

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.

Very early on the first day of the week, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb.

They left and ran from the tomb, shaking and confused. They said nothing to anyone because they were too scared.

It was preparation day and the Sabbath would soon begin.

They returned home and prepared spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath they rested, observing the commandment.

Standing near the cross were Jesus' mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.

It was preparation day, and the Jewish leaders didn't want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath day (in fact this was a special Sabbath), so they asked Pilate to break the legs, so that the bodies could be removed.
