Levi organized a large banquet at his home in Jesus' honor. Many tax collectors and others were in the crowd that sat down to eat with them. But the Pharisees and the religious teachers complained to Jesus' disciples, asking,

On the other hand the Son of man came and did feast and drink, and people say, ‘Look, he's greedy and drinks too much; he's a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by what it does…”

For if you only love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do that?

While Jesus was eating at Matthew's home, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down at the table with Jesus and his disciples.

As Jesus moved on from there he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth. Jesus called to him, “Follow me!” He got up, and followed Jesus.

That evening Jesus ate dinner at Levi's house. Many tax collectors and “sinners” joined Jesus and his disciples for the meal, for there were many of these people that followed Jesus.

Tax collectors and other “sinners” often used to come and listen to Jesus.

There a dinner was arranged in his honor. Martha helped serve the food while Lazarus sat at the table with Jesus and the other guests.

If a non-Christian invites you to a meal, and you feel like going, eat whatever you are served, without asking questions because of your conscience.
