So the LORD made sure that every prophet warned Israel and Judah with these words: “I, the LORD, command you to stop doing sinful things and start obeying my laws and teachings! I gave them to your ancestors, and I told my servants the prophets to repeat them to you.”

But the Israelites would not listen; they were as stubborn as their ancestors who had refused to worship the LORD their God.

but he still sent prophets who warned them to turn back to him. The people refused to listen.

You knew that the King of Egypt and his officials and his nation had ill-treated your people. So you worked fearsome miracles against the Egyptians and earned a reputation that still remains.

Our stubborn ancestors refused to obey— they forgot about the miracles you had worked for them, and they were determined to return to Egypt and become slaves again. But, our God, you are merciful and quick to forgive; you are loving, kind, and very patient. So you never turned away from them—

In spite of this, they rebelled and disobeyed your laws. They killed your prophets, who warned them to turn back to you, and they cursed your name.

For years, you were patient, and your Spirit warned them with messages spoken by your prophets. Still they refused to listen, and you handed them over to their enemies.

Moses and Aaron went to the king and told him that the LORD God of the Hebrews had said: How long will you stubbornly refuse to obey? Release my people so they can worship me.

“Listen, everyone! Some time ago, the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, warned you that he would bring disaster on Jerusalem and all nearby villages. But you were stubborn and refused to listen. Now the LORD is going to bring the disaster he promised.”

I told the people: You escaped the disaster that struck Judah, but now the LORD warns you to stay away from Egypt.

But Azariah, Johanan and some other arrogant men said to me, “You're lying! The LORD didn't tell you to say that we shouldn't go to Egypt.

Even now, your pride keeps you from respecting me and obeying the laws and teachings I gave you and your ancestors.

But you have ignored me and become even more stubborn and sinful than your ancestors ever were!

I gave them my laws and teachings, so they would know how to live right.

But when he became proud and stubborn, his glorious kingdom was taken from him.

That's why I slaughtered you with the words of my prophets. That's why my judgments blazed like the dawning sun.

Obey them and you will live. I am the LORD.

Jesus said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? Only God is good. If you want to have eternal life, you must obey his commandments.”

Jesus said, “You have given the right answer. If you do this, you will have eternal life.”

Moses said that a person could become acceptable to God by obeying the Law. He did this when he wrote, “If you want to live, you must do all that the Law commands.”

The Law isn't based on faith. It promises life only to people who obey its commands.

When I punish the Israelites and their descendants with suffering and disasters, I will remind them that they know the words to this song, so they have no excuse for not obeying me. I will give them the land that I promised, but I know the way they are going to live later on.

I know how stubborn and rebellious you and the rest of the Israelites are. You have rebelled against the LORD while I have been alive, and it will only get worse after I am gone.

I am your God, and I told you not to worship Amorite gods, even though you are living in the land of the Amorites. But you refused to listen.
