So in my anger, I called down curses on those men. I had them beaten and even pulled out the hair of some of them. Then I made them promise: In the name of God we solemnly promise not to let our sons and daughters marry foreigners.

Elisha turned round and stared at the boys. Then he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Straight away two bears ran out of the woods and ripped to pieces forty-two of the boys.

When I heard their complaints and their charges, I became very angry.

I get furious when evil people turn against your Law.

They hate worthless people, but show respect for all who worship the LORD. And they keep their promises, no matter what the cost.

Your men will even marry their women and be influenced to worship their gods.

Lawbreakers praise criminals, but law-abiding citizens always oppose them.

I let them beat my back and pull out my beard. I didn't turn aside when they insulted me and spat in my face.

Worship and obey the LORD your God with fear and trembling, and promise that you will be loyal to him.

and don't let your sons and daughters marry any of them.

Don't ever turn your backs on him by marrying people from the nations that are left in the land. Don't even make friends with them. I tell you that if you are friendly with those nations, the LORD won't chase them away when you attack. Instead, they'll be like a trap for your feet, a whip on your back, and thorns in your eyes. And finally, none of you will be left in this good land that the LORD has given you.
