But you have turned your backs on me. Your teachings have led others to do sinful things, and you have broken the agreement I made with your ancestor Levi.

Uriah followed the plans and built an altar exactly like the one in Damascus, finishing it just before Ahaz came back.

I pray that God will punish them for breaking their priestly vows and disgracing the Levi tribe.

But you, my people, have turned from me to burn incense to worthless idols. You have left the ancient road to follow an unknown path where you stumble over idols.

The priests who teach my laws don't care to know me. Your leaders rebel against me; your prophets give messages from Baal and worship false gods.

The priests of Israel ignore my Law! Not only do they refuse to respect any of my sacred things, but they don't even teach the difference between what is sacred and what is ordinary, or between what is clean and what is unclean. They treat my Sabbath like any other day, and so my own people no longer honour me.

Some of the Levites turned their backs on me and joined the other people of Israel in worshipping idols. So these Levites must be punished!

But because these Levites served the people of Israel when they worshipped idols, I, the LORD God, promise that the Levites will be punished. They did not stop the Israelites from sinning,

My temple has been disgraced, because you have let godless, stubborn foreigners come here when sacrifices are being offered to me. You have sinned and have broken our solemn agreement.

You priests have rejected me, and my people are destroyed by refusing to obey. Now I'll reject you and forget your children, because you have forgotten my Law.

In this way, your descendants will be qualified to serve me. Remember—I am the LORD, and I have chosen you.

Jerusalem's prophets are proud and not to be trusted. The priests have disgraced the place of worship and abused God's Law.

I, the LORD All-Powerful, have something to say to you priests. Children respect their fathers, and servants respect their masters. I am your father and your master, so why don't you respect me? You priests have insulted me, and now you ask, “How did we insult you?”

I blessed him with a full life, as I had promised, and he kept his part of the agreement by honouring me and respecting my name.

But instead of punishing them, I forgave them. So because of the loyalty that Phinehas showed, I solemnly promise that he and his descendants will always be my priests.”

It is best not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else that causes problems for other followers of the Lord.

My friends, watch out! Don't let evil thoughts or doubts make any of you turn from the living God.

Eli's sons did not show any respect for the sacrifices that the people offered. This was a terrible sin, and it made the LORD very angry.

I am the LORD, the God of Israel. I promised to let your family serve me as priests for ever, but now I tell you that I cannot do this any longer! I honour anyone who honours me, but I put a curse on anyone who hates me.
