The smell of the burning offering pleased God, and he said: Never again will I punish the earth for the sinful things its people do. All of them have evil thoughts from the time they are young, but I will never destroy everything that breathes, as I did this time.

I noticed how sad you were when you read that this country and its people would be completely wiped out. You even tore your clothes in sorrow, and I heard you cry.

Nebuchadnezzar's troops burnt down the temple and destroyed every important building in the city. Then they broke down the city wall.

They told me, “Those captives who have come back are having all kinds of troubles. They are terribly disgraced, Jerusalem's walls are broken down, and its gates have been burnt.”

But when I got back, I said to them, “Jerusalem is truly in a mess! The gates have been torn down and burnt, and everything is in ruins. We must rebuild the city wall so that we can again take pride in our city.”

I answered, “Your Majesty, I hope you live for ever! I feel sad because the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and its gates have been burnt down.”

Your country lies in ruins; your towns are in ashes. Foreigners and strangers take and destroy your land while you watch.

Then I asked the LORD, “How long will this last?” The LORD answered: Until their towns are destroyed and their houses are deserted, until their fields are empty,

For a little while, your temple belonged to us; and now our enemies have torn it down.

Don't be so furious or keep our sins in your thoughts for ever! Remember that all of us are your people.

You sacrifice oxen to me, and you commit murder; you sacrifice lambs to me and dogs to other gods; you offer grain to me and pigs' blood to idols; you burn incense to me and praise your idols. You have made your own choice to do these disgusting things that you enjoy so much.

But if you ignore me, I promise in my own name that this palace will lie in ruins.

I will destroy this temple, just as I destroyed the town of Shiloh. Then everyone on earth will use the name “Jerusalem” as a curse word.

The Lord abandoned his altar and his temple; he let Zion's enemies capture her fortresses. Noisy shouts were heard from the temple, as if it were a time of celebration.

Every town will lie in ruins, and the land will be a barren desert. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

They will lose all courage and stumble with fear. My slaughtering sword is waiting at every gate, flashing and ready to kill.

When they ask why you are groaning, tell them you have terrifying news that will make them faint and tremble in fear and lose all courage. These things will happen soon. I, the LORD God, make this promise!

The LORD wiped out nations and left fortresses crumbling in the dust. Their streets and towns were reduced to ruins and emptied of people.

Some of them will be killed by swords. Others will be carried off to foreign countries. Jerusalem will be overrun by foreign nations until their time comes to an end.

We have heard him claim that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses gave us.”

No sacrifices can be made for people who decide to sin after they find out about the truth.
