At first these people did not worship the LORD, so he sent lions to attack them, and the lions killed some of them.

I am the LORD God, and I promise to punish Jerusalem severely. I will send war, starvation, wild animals, and deadly disease to slaughter its people and livestock.

I will make the whole country an empty wasteland and crush the power in which you take such pride. Even the mountains will be bare, and no one will try to cross them.

Starvation and wild animals will kill your children. I'll punish you with horrible diseases, and your enemies will strike you down with their swords. I, the LORD, have spoken.

I will bless your country with peace, and you will rest without fear. I will wipe out the dangerous animals and protect you from enemy attacks.

And so, because of you, Jerusalem will be ploughed under and left in ruins. Thorns will cover the mountain where the temple now stands.

That's why I came with a whirlwind and scattered them among foreign nations, leaving their lovely country empty of people and in ruins.

You'll be struck by starvation and deadly diseases, by the fangs of wild animals and poisonous snakes.

In the time of Shamgar son of Anath, and now again in Jael's time, roads were too dangerous for caravans. Travellers had to take the back roads,
