Everyone is against me; they sneer and slap my face.

They are hateful and keep their distance, even while spitting in my direction.

Please have mercy, LORD! We have been insulted more than we can stand,

I am crushed by insults, and I feel sick. I had hoped for mercy and pity, but there was none.

My love for your house burns in me like a fire, and when others insulted you, they insulted me as well.

But I tell you not to try to get even with a person who has done something to you. When someone slaps your right cheek, turn and let that person slap your other cheek.

If someone slaps you on one cheek, don't stop that person from slapping you on the other cheek. If someone wants to take your coat, don't try to keep back your shirt.

In fact, you let people make slaves of you and cheat you and steal from you. Why, you even let them strut around and slap you in the face.
