They are higher than the heavens and deeper than the grave. So what can you do when you know so little,

Death and destruction have merely heard rumours about where it is found.

Now I would be at peace in the silent world below

sending me to destruction and my crops to the flames.

Have you seen the gate to the world of the dead?

I am in command of the world and in debt to no one.

When God becomes angry, he can move mountains before they even know it.

Or suppose I said, “I'll hide in the dark until night comes to cover me over.”

If I were to climb up to the highest heavens, you would be there. If I were to dig down to the world of the dead you would also be there.

Do you work miracles for the dead? Do they stand up and praise you?

If the LORD can see everything in the world of the dead, he can see in our hearts.

Death and the grave are never satisfied, and neither are we.

The world of the dead eagerly waits for you. With great excitement, the spirits of ancient rulers hear about your coming.

“You explain deep mysteries, because even the dark is light to you.

“If they dig deep into the earth or climb to the sky, I'll reach out and get them.

Nothing is hidden from God! He sees through everything, and we will have to tell him the truth.

Their king was the angel in charge of the deep pit. In Hebrew his name was Abaddon, and in Greek it was Apollyon.
