Keep these promises! But let me tell you what will happen. As surely as I am the LORD God, I swear that I will never again accept any promises you make in my name.

You were willing to offer the LORD your only son, and so he makes you this solemn promise,

But to the wicked I say: “You don't have the right to mention my laws or claim to keep our agreement!

“I won't break my agreement or go back on my word.

The LORD has given his word and made this promise: “Never again will I give to your enemies the grain and grapes for which you struggled.

But if you ignore me, I promise in my own name that this palace will lie in ruins.

The rotten figs stand for King Zedekiah of Judah, his officials, and all the others who were not taken away to Babylonia, whether they stayed here in Judah or went to live in Egypt.

Make promises only in my name, and do what you promise! Then all nations will praise me, and I will bless them.

I, the LORD All-Powerful, have decided to wipe you out with disasters.

None of you will survive. You may hope to return to Judah some day, but only a very few of you will escape death and be able to go back.

Then I told the men and their wives, that the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, had said: Here in Egypt you still keep your promises to burn incense and offer sacrifices of wine to the so called Queen of Heaven.

Egypt, I am the true king, the LORD All-Powerful, and as surely as I live, those enemies who attack will tower over you like Mount Tabor among the hills or Mount Carmel by the sea.

I, the LORD, swear in my own name that your city of Bozrah and all your towns will suffer a horrible fate. They will lie in ruins for ever, and people will use the name “Bozrah” as a curse word.

Everyone breaks promises made in my name.”

I, the LORD All-Powerful, swear by my own life that enemy soldiers will fill your streets like a swarm of locusts. They will shout and celebrate their victory.

You steal and murder; you lie in court and are unfaithful in marriage. You worship idols and offer incense to Baal, when these gods have never done anything for you.

Go ahead and worship your idols for now, you Israelites, because soon I will no longer let you dishonour me by offering gifts to them. You will have no choice but to obey me!

Israel, you are unfaithful, but don't lead Judah to sin. Stop worshipping at Gilgal or at sinful Bethel. And stop making promises in my name— the name of the living LORD.

As you carry out a corpse to prepare it for burial, your relative in the house will ask, “Are there others?” You will answer, “No!” Then your relative will reply, “Be quiet! Don't dare mention the name of the LORD.”

The LORD God All-Powerful has sworn by his own name: “You descendants of Jacob make me angry by your pride, and I hate your fortresses. And so I will surrender your city and possessions to your enemies.”

I, the LORD, won't forget any of this, though you take great pride in your ancestor Jacob.

And who did God say would never enter his place of rest? Weren't they the ones that disobeyed him?

No one is greater than God. So he made a promise in his own name when he said to Abraham,

God cannot tell lies! And so his promises and vows are two things that can never be changed. We have run to God for safety. Now his promises should greatly encourage us to take hold of the hope that is right in front of us.
