Then the LORD said, “I won't let my life-giving breath remain in anyone for ever. No one will live for more than one hundred and twenty years.”

They ignored the LORD's warnings and commands, and they rejected the solemn agreement he had made with their ancestors. They worshipped worthless idols and became worthless themselves. The LORD had told the Israelites not to do the things that the foreign nations around them were doing, but Israel became just like them.

I am the LORD All-Powerful, the mighty ruler of Israel, and I make you a promise: you are now my enemy, and I will show my anger by taking revenge on you.

You have not brought delicious spices for me or given me the best part of your sacrificed animals. Instead, you burden me down with your terrible sins.

Then I said: Listen, every one of you in the royal family of David. You have already tried my patience. Now you are trying God's patience by refusing to ask for proof.

My people, you abandoned me and walked away. I am tired of showing mercy; that's why I'll destroy you

Your land will be ruined, and every passer-by will look at it with horror and make insulting remarks.

You were supposed to take care of my people, but instead you chased them away. So now I'll really take care of you, and believe me, you will pay for your crimes!

I will punish them with a terrible disaster, and everyone on earth will tremble when they hear about it. I will force the people of Judah to go to foreign countries, where they will be cursed and insulted.

This country will be as empty as a desert, because I will make all of you the slaves of the king of Babylonia for seventy years.

I started with Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, and the king and his officials were removed from power in disgrace. Everyone still makes insulting jokes about them and uses their names as curse words.

I will destroy this temple, just as I destroyed the town of Shiloh. Then everyone on earth will use the name “Jerusalem” as a curse word.

Your friends have forgotten you; they don't care any more. Even I have acted like an enemy. And because your sins are horrible and countless, I will be cruel as I punish you. So don't bother to cry out for relief from your pain.

With all your hearts, keep the agreement I made with you. But if you are stubborn and keep on sinning, my anger will burn like a fire that cannot be put out.

I, the LORD, was angry with the people of Jerusalem and punished them. And if you go to Egypt, I will be angry and punish you the same way. You will never again see your homeland. People will be horrified at what I do to you, and they will use the name of your city as a curse word.

There were only a few of you left in Judah, and you decided to go to Egypt. But you will die such horrible deaths in war or from starvation, that people of other countries will use the name of Judah as a curse word.

I am the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel. You saw how I destroyed Jerusalem and the towns of Judah. They lie empty and in ruins today,

Finally, my anger struck like a raging flood, and today Jerusalem and the towns of Judah are nothing but empty ruins.

Spread salt on the ground to kill the crops. Leave its towns in ruins, with no one living there.

Why shouldn't I punish the people of Judah?

Foreign nations will realize that the Israelites were forced to leave their own land because they sinned against me. I turned my back on my people and let enemies attack and kill them.

You will feel my fierce anger until I have finished taking revenge. Then you will know that I, the LORD, was furious because of your disobedience.

Everyone in Israel has stubbornly refused to obey your laws, and so those curses written by your servant Moses have fallen upon us.

You warned us and our leaders that Jerusalem would suffer the worst disaster in human history, and you did exactly as you had threatened.

And so I will crush you, just as a wagon full of grain crushes the ground.

You have worn out the LORD with your words. And yet, you ask, “How did we do that?” You did it by saying, “The LORD is pleased with evil and doesn't care about justice.”

God wanted to show his anger and reveal his power against everyone who deserved to be destroyed. But instead, he patiently put up with them.
