The people of Israel moan and say to me, “We were like wild bulls, but you, LORD, broke us, and we learnt to obey. You are our God— please let us come home.

Consider yourself fortunate if God All-Powerful chooses to correct you.

He punished me terribly, but he did not let death lay its hands on me.

Once you corrected me for not obeying you, but now I obey.

Your decisions are correct, and you were right to punish me.

My life is in your hands. Save me from enemies who hunt me down.

Don't be stupid like horses and mules that must be led with ropes to make them obey.”

LORD God All-Powerful, make us strong again! Smile on us and save us.

We have rebelled against you just like our ancestors, and we are ashamed of our sins.”

Some day those who guard the hill country of Ephraim will shout, “Let's go to Zion and worship the LORD our God.”

They will weep and pray as I bring them home. I will lead them to streams of water. They will walk on a level road and not stumble. I am a father to Israel, my favourite children.

I answered, “I know that you look for truth. You punished your people for their lies, but in spite of the pain, they became more stubborn and refused to turn back to you.”

Bring us back to you! Give us a fresh start.

Then you will remember your wicked sins, and you will hate yourselves for doing such horrible things. They have made you unacceptable to me,

God sent his chosen Son to you first, because God wanted to bless you and make each one of you turn away from your sins.

God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him.

But you have forgotten that the Scriptures say to God's children, “When the Lord punishes you, don't make light of it, and when he corrects you, don't be discouraged.

I correct and punish everyone I love. So make up your minds to turn away from your sins.
