listen from your home in heaven and answer their prayers. Then everyone on earth will worship you, just like your people Israel, and they will know that I have built this temple to honour you.

You can be sure of this: all crooks will be punished, but God's people won't.

If good people are rewarded here on this earth, all who are cruel and mean will surely be punished.

By insulting the poor, you insult your Creator. You will be punished if you make fun of someone in trouble.

The Lord will do what he has planned against Jerusalem and Mount Zion. Then he will punish the proud and boastful king of Assyria,

Then say to them: I am the LORD, and what I'm going to do will make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem appear to be full of wine. And the worst ones will be the kings of David's family and the priests and the prophets.

I am the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and you kings of Judah and you people of Jerusalem had better pay attention. I am going to bring so much trouble on this valley that everyone who hears about it will be shocked.

So don't be afraid, even though now you deserve to be punished and have been scattered among other nations. But when I destroy them, I will protect you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Even those nations that don't deserve to be punished will have to drink from the cup of my anger. So how can you possibly hope to escape?

Or suppose I send an enemy to attack a sinful nation and kill its people and livestock.

I am the LORD God, and I promise to punish Jerusalem severely. I will send war, starvation, wild animals, and deadly disease to slaughter its people and livestock.

I, the LORD, will make the mountains of Israel turn against you. Your troops will be so terrified that they will attack each other.

I forced the people of Judah to drink the wine of my anger on my sacred mountain. Soon the neighbouring nations must drink their fill— then vanish without a trace.

The LORD All-Powerful said: My sword, wake up! Attack my shepherd and friend. Strike down the shepherd! Scatter the little sheep, and I will destroy them.

If this can happen when the wood is green, what do you think will happen when it is dry?

God has already begun judging his own people. And if his judgment begins with us, imagine how terrible it will be for those who refuse to obey his message. The Scriptures say,
