The LORD says: My people, you were sold, but not for money; now you will be set free, but not for a payment.

You sold your people for little or nothing, and you earned no profit.

You made us look foolish to our neighbours, and people who live nearby insult us and sneer.

Jerusalem, you will be saved by showing justice; Zion's people who turn to me will be saved by doing right.

I have done the right thing by placing Cyrus in power, and I will make the roads easy for him to follow. I am the LORD All-Powerful! Cyrus will rebuild my city and set my people free without being paid a thing. I, the LORD, have spoken.

The LORD says, “Children, I didn't divorce your mother or sell you to pay debts; I divorced her and sold you because of your sins.

Then you will be called, ‘The LORD's Own People, The Ones He Rescued!’ Your city will be known as a good place to live and a city full of people.”

I did this because I wanted to take revenge— the time had come to rescue my people.

I will give them everything you own, because you have sinned everywhere in your country.

You had sex on every street corner, and when you finished, you refused to accept money. That's worse than being a prostitute!

to make their trees produce fruit and their crops grow. I will set them free from slavery and let them live safely in their own land. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

If you cannot gain your freedom in any of these ways, both you and your children will still be set free in the Year of Celebration.

You were rescued from the useless way of life that you learnt from your ancestors. But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don't last for ever.
