Your city is filled with noisy shouts. Those who lie drunk in your streets were not killed in battle.

Happy times have disappeared from the earth, and people shout in the streets, “We're out of wine!”

Fortress cities are left like a desert where no one lives. Cattle walk through the ruins, stripping the trees bare.

Its palaces and fortresses will be covered with thorns; only wolves and ostriches will make their home there.

Four hectares of grapevines will produce only twenty-seven litres of juice, and a hundred and eighty litres of seed will produce merely eighteen litres of grain.

Now there are empty spaces where the buildings once stood. But I am furious, and these spaces will be filled with the bodies of the people I kill. The people of Jerusalem will cry out to me for help, but they are evil, and I will ignore their prayers.

Meanwhile, the Babylonian army had burnt the houses in Jerusalem, including the royal palace, and they had broken down the city walls.

The altars at sinful Bethel will be destroyed for causing Israel to sin; they will be overgrown with thorns and thistles. Then everyone will beg the mountains and hills to cover and protect them.

or I will strip her naked like the day she was born. I will make her barren like a desert, and she will die of thirst.

Even if you escape alive, you will end up in Egypt and be buried in Memphis. Your silver treasures will be lost among weeds; thorns will sprout in your tents.
