You have destroyed the fortress of our enemies, leaving their city in ruins. Nothing in that foreign city will ever be rebuilt.

No one can rebuild what he destroys, or release those he has imprisoned.

No one will live in Babylon. Even nomads won't camp nearby, and shepherds won't let their sheep rest there.

Only desert creatures, owls, and ostriches will live in its ruins, and goats will leap about.

Hyenas and wolves will howl from Babylon's fortresses and beautiful palaces. Its time is almost up!

The LORD will sweep out the people, and the land will become a swamp for wild animals.

This is a message about Damascus: Damascus is doomed! It will end up in ruins.

Israel will lose its fortresses. The kingdom of Damascus will be destroyed; its survivors will suffer the same fate as Israel. The LORD All-Powerful has promised this.

Now I see column after column of cavalry troops.” Straight away someone shouted, “Babylon has fallen! Every idol in the city lies broken on the ground.”

The LORD's hand has reached across the sea, upsetting the nations. He has given a command to destroy fortresses in the land of Canaan.

Towns are crushed and in chaos; houses are locked tight.

The walls of their fortresses will be knocked down and scattered in the dust.

God has put down our enemies in their mountain city and rubbed it in the dust.

Fortress cities are left like a desert where no one lives. Cattle walk through the ruins, stripping the trees bare.

The palace will be deserted, the crowded city empty. Fortresses and towers will for ever become playgrounds for wild donkeys and pastures for sheep.

even if hailstones flatten forests and cities.

Its palaces and fortresses will be covered with thorns; only wolves and ostriches will make their home there.

Sennacherib, now listen to me, the LORD. I planned all this long ago. And you don't even know that I alone am the one who decided that you would do these things. I let you make ruins of fortified cities.

Your stone blocks won't be reused for cornerstones or foundations, and I promise that for ever you will be a desert. I, the LORD, have spoken.

I heard the LORD reply, “When I have finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live.”

Gather all the possessions of the people who lived there, and pile them up in the market place, without keeping anything for yourself. Set the pile and the whole town on fire, and don't ever rebuild the town. The whole town will be a sacrifice to the LORD your God. Then he won't be angry any more, and he will have mercy on you and make you successful, just as he promised your ancestors.

They cried loudly, and in their sorrow they threw dust on their heads, as they said, “Pity the great city of Babylon! Everyone who sailed the seas became rich from her treasures. But in a single hour the city was destroyed.
