The LORD sent King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia to attack Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar killed the young men who were in the temple, and he showed no mercy to anyone, whether man or woman, young or old. God let him kill everyone in the city.

When God showed his anger, the servants of the sea monster fell at his feet.

No matter how much you know or what plans you make, you can't defeat the LORD.

A ruler who ill-treats the poor is like a roaring lion or a bear hunting for food.

I have conquered the whole world! And it was easier than taking eggs from an unguarded nest. No one even flapped a wing or made a cheep.

The LORD has crushed the power of those evil kings,

You defeated my people. Now you're in for trouble! You've never been destroyed, but you will be destroyed; you've never been betrayed, but you will be betrayed. When you have finished destroying and betraying, you will be destroyed and betrayed in return.

and the countries in the north, both near and far. I went to all the countries on earth, one after another, and finally to Babylonia.

and now I will let you be attacked by nations from the north, and especially by my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. You and other nearby nations will be destroyed and left in ruins for ever. Everyone who sees what has happened will be shocked, but they will still make fun of you.

I will order the nearby nations to mourn for you and say, “Isn't it sad? Moab ruled others, but now its glorious power has been shattered.”

Babylon, you should be named, “The Proud One”. But the time has come when I, the LORD All-Powerful, will punish you.

Everyone heard my groaning, but no one offered comfort. My enemies know of the trouble that you have brought on me, and it makes them glad. Hurry and punish them, as you have promised.

To him the nations are far less than nothing; God controls the stars in the sky and everyone on this earth. When God does something, we cannot change it or even ask why.”

Will he keep hauling in his nets and destroying nations without showing mercy?

Wine is treacherous, and arrogant people are never satisfied. They are no less greedy than death itself— they open their mouths as wide as the world of the dead and swallow everyone.

Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!
