But you crushed us, and you covered us with deepest darkness where wild animals live.

The LORD will sweep out the people, and the land will become a swamp for wild animals.

You have destroyed the fortress of our enemies, leaving their city in ruins. Nothing in that foreign city will ever be rebuilt.

The palace will be deserted, the crowded city empty. Fortresses and towers will for ever become playgrounds for wild donkeys and pastures for sheep.

Its palaces and fortresses will be covered with thorns; only wolves and ostriches will make their home there.

Wildcats and hyenas will hunt together, demons will scream to demons, and creatures of the night will live among the ruins.

Scorching sand will turn into a lake, and thirsty ground will flow with fountains. Grass will grow in wetlands, where packs of wild dogs once made their home.

Every wild animal honours me, even jackals and owls. I provide water in deserts— streams in thirsty lands for my chosen people.

It won't be long now— disaster will hit Moab!

I am the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and I make this promise— “Soon Babylon will be levelled and packed down like a threshing place at harvest time.”

I heard the LORD reply, “When I have finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live.”

Even jackals nurse their young, but my people are like ostriches that abandon their own.

Because of this tragedy, I go barefoot and naked. My crying and weeping sound like howling wolves or ostriches.

At the time I have decided, my words will come true. You can trust what I say about the future. It may take a long time, but keep on waiting— it will happen!

Herds of wild animals will live in its rubble; all kinds of desert owls will perch on its stones and hoot in the windows. Noisy ravens will be heard inside its buildings, stripped bare of cedar.

Soon our enemies will get what they deserve— suddenly they will slip, and total disaster will quickly follow.

They will be greedy and cheat you with smooth talk. But long ago God decided to punish them, and God doesn't sleep.
