Wine is treacherous, and arrogant people are never satisfied. They are no less greedy than death itself— they open their mouths as wide as the world of the dead and swallow everyone.

Amaziah, you think you're so powerful because you defeated Edom. Go ahead and celebrate—but stay at home. If you cause any trouble, both you and your kingdom of Judah will be destroyed.

Though you are above us all, you care for humble people, and you keep a close watch on everyone who is proud.

The world of the dead has opened its mouth wide and is eagerly waiting for the leaders of Jerusalem and for its noisy crowds, especially for those who take pride in that city.

You are in for trouble! You take over house after house and field after field, until there is no room left for anyone else in all the land.

and now I will let you be attacked by nations from the north, and especially by my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. You and other nearby nations will be destroyed and left in ruins for ever. Everyone who sees what has happened will be shocked, but they will still make fun of you.

Attack Babylon, enemy archers; set up camp around the city, and don't let anyone escape. It challenged me, the holy God, so do to it what it did to other cities.

And since they are hungry, I will give them a banquet. They will celebrate, get drunk, then fall asleep, never to wake up!

Then an enemy comes along and takes them captive with hooks and nets. It makes him so happy

Will he keep hauling in his nets and destroying nations without showing mercy?

“I, the LORD, refuse to accept anyone who is proud. Only those who live by faith are acceptable to me.”

Try your best to live quietly, to mind your own business, and to work hard, just as we taught you to do.

In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, “God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble.”
