and named the light “Day” and the darkness “Night”. Evening came and then morning—that was the first day.

Twice every day they offer sacrifices and burn incense to the LORD. They set out the sacred loaves of bread on a table that has been purified, and they light the lamps in the gold lampstand every day at sunset. We follow the commands of the LORD our God—you have rejected him!

Everyone who serves the LORD, come and offer praises. Everyone who has gathered in his temple tonight,

Remember this day and celebrate it each year as a festival in my honour.

Aaron followed the LORD's instructions and put the manna in front of the sacred chest for safekeeping.

When I give you the Ten Commandments written on two flat stones, put them inside the chest.

Whenever they enter the sacred tent or serve at the altar or enter the holy place, they must wear these shorts, or else they will be guilty and die. This same rule applies to any of their descendants who serve as priests.

You and your descendants must always offer this sacrifice on the altar at the entrance to the sacred tent. People of Israel, I will meet and speak with you there, and my shining glory will make the place holy.

Because of who I am, the tent will become sacred, and Aaron and his sons will become worthy to serve as my priests.

Pound some of it into powder and sprinkle it in front of the sacred chest, where I meet with you. Be sure to treat this incense as something very holy.

When you or your sons enter the sacred tent, you must never drink beer or wine. If you do, you will die there! This law will never change.

You must celebrate this day each year—it is the Great Day of Forgiveness for all the sins of the people of Israel. Moses did exactly as the LORD had commanded.

Don't ever turn from me again and offer sacrifices to goat-demons. This law will never change.

I am your God, and I forbid you to eat any new grain or anything made from it until you have brought these offerings. This law will never change.

This is a day of celebration and worship, a time of rest from your work. You and your descendants must obey this law.

Aaron will set up the gold lampstand in the holy place of the sacred tent. Then he will light the seven lamps that must be kept burning there in my presence, every night from now on. This law will never change.

This bread will always belong to Aaron and his family; it is very holy because it was offered to me, and it must be eaten in a holy place.

So you and your descendants must never eat any fat or any blood, not even in the privacy of your own homes. This law will never change.

Lay your hand on its head and have it killed there. A priest will then splatter its blood against the four sides of the altar.

where one of them will scoop up a handful of the flour and oil, together with all the incense on it. Then, to show that the whole offering belongs to me, he will lay all of this on the altar and send it up in smoke with a smell that pleases me.

This law will never change. I am the LORD!

You priests should be eager to spread knowledge, and everyone should come to you for instruction, because you speak for me, the LORD All-Powerful.

Follow these instructions, so I won't become angry and punish the Israelites ever again.

These laws will never change. The man who sprinkled the water and the ashes on you when you were unclean must also wash his clothes. And whoever touches this water is unclean until evening.

The community of Israel must always obey these laws.

Then you, Moses, will call together all the people of Israel and make the Levites go to my sacred tent,

Although your people live in darkness, they will see a bright light. Although they live in the shadow of death, a light will shine on them.”

Be ready and keep your lamps burning

John was a lamp that gave a lot of light, and you were glad to enjoy his light for a while.

The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.

All this makes us even more certain that what the prophets said is true. So you should pay close attention to their message, as you would to a lamp shining in some dark place. You must keep on paying attention until daylight comes and the morning star rises in your hearts.

This is what you must write to the angel of the church in Ephesus: I am the one who holds the seven stars in my right hand, and I walk among the seven gold lampstands. Listen to what I say.

David made this a law for Israel, and it has been the same ever since.
