People will think they are safe and secure. But destruction will suddenly strike them like the pains of a woman about to give birth. And they won't escape.

Even in times of success, they constantly hear the threat of doom.

God may let them feel secure, but they are never out of his sight.

Surprise them with disaster! Trap them in their own nets and let them fall and rot in the pits they have dug.

They trembled all over like women giving birth

All who hate me are controlled by the power of evil. Sentence them to death and send them down alive to the world of the dead.

Make their table a trap for them and their friends.

If you keep being stubborn after many warnings, you will suddenly discover you have gone too far.

You once trusted them to help, but now I'll let them rule you. What do you say about that? You will be in pain like a woman giving birth.

Have you rejected Judah, LORD? Do you hate Jerusalem? Why did you strike down Judah with a fatal wound? We had hoped for peace and a time of healing, but all we got was terror.

Those who live in the palace panelled with cedar will groan with pain like women giving birth.

I heard groaning and crying. Was it a woman giving birth to her first child? No, it was Jerusalem. She was gasping for breath and begging for help. “I'm dying!” she said. “They have murdered me.”

All they ever offer to my deeply wounded people are empty hopes for peace.

Those prophets refuse to be honest. They tell my people there will be peace, even though there's no peace to be found. They are like workers who think they can fix a shaky wall by covering it with paint.

You are like a senseless child who refuses to be born at the proper time.

They are like drunkards overcome by wine, or like dry thorn bushes burning in a fire.

You are nothing but snakes and the children of snakes! How can you escape going to hell?

When a woman is about to give birth, she is in great pain. But after it is all over, she forgets the pain and is happy, because she has brought a child into the world.

“Look, you people who make fun of God! Be amazed and disappear. I will do something today that you won't believe, even if someone tells you about it!”

You may be an Israelite and know-all about the LORD's agreement with us, but he won't bless you if you rebel against him. You may think you can get away with it, but you will cause the rest of Israel to be punished along with you.

Their punishment will be eternal destruction, and they will be kept far from the presence of our Lord and his glorious strength.

Here you will find all God's dearest children, whose names are written in heaven. And you will find God himself, who judges everyone. Here also are the spirits of those good people who have been made perfect.

So if we refuse this great way of being saved, how can we hope to escape? The Lord himself was the first to tell about it, and people who heard the message proved to us that it was true.

God did not have pity on the angels that sinned. He had them tied up and thrown into the dark pits of hell until the time of judgment.
