When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? [Heb. 13:6.]

THE Lord is my Light and my Salvation–whom shall I fear or dread? The Lord is the Refuge and Stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?

Some Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

And the Philistine said, I defy the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

And he changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be insane in their [Philistine] hands, and scribbled on the gate doors, and drooled on his beard.

Now when the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
