But you have this day rejected your God, Who Himself saves you from all your calamities and distresses; and you have said to Him, No! Set a king over us. So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.

The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is wholly of the Lord [even the events that seem accidental are really ordered by Him].

But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, you are little to be among the clans of Judah; [yet] out of you shall One come forth for Me Who is to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth have been from of old, from ancient days (eternity). [Gen. 49:10; Matt. 2:5-12; John 7:42.]

And Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.

And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken [probably by lot].

But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, No! A king shall reign over us–when the Lord your God was your King!

So the Lord delivered Israel that day, and the battle passed beyond Beth-aven.

Then Saul said, Draw near, all the chiefs of the people, and let us see how this sin [causing God's silence] arose today.

And the Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, for the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh through the word of the Lord.

AND THE word of [the Lord through] Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines and encamped beside Ebenezer; the Philistines encamped at Aphek.

Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, No! We will have a king over us,

And said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint us a king to rule over us like all the other nations.
