3 The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.

For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; He blesses the greedy and renounces the Lord.


The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.


Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the Lord.


For a servant when he reigns, A fool when he is filled with food,


Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.

Please, let not my lord regard this scoundrel Nabal. For as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and folly is with him! But I, your maidservant, did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.

We made an invasion of the southern area of the Cherethites, in the territory which belongs to Judah, and of the southern area of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.”
