I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,


“Son of man, propound a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;


Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of parables?’”


In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you and moan bitterly, and say, “We are utterly ruined; he changes the portion of my people; how he removes it from me! To an apostate he allots our fields.”


Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say, “Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own— for how long?— and loads himself with pledges!”


And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.


And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there,


And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying,


“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.


And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country.


And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.


And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?


And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?


With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it.


Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?”


he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’


“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.
