When the king of Israel had read the letter, he tore his clothes {to show he was sad and upset}. The king of Israel said, “Am I God? No! I don’t have the power over life and death. So why did the king of Aram send a man sick with leprosy [42] for me to heal? Think about it, and you will see {that it is a trick}. The king of Aram is trying to start a fight!”


Then the Pharisees {\cf2\super [305]} left the place where Jesus was teaching. They made plans to catch Jesus saying something wrong.


But Jesus knew that these men were trying to trick him. So he said, “You hypocrites {\cf2\super [308]} ! Why are you trying to catch me saying something wrong?


One Pharisee was an expert in the law \{of Moses\}. That Pharisee asked Jesus a question to test him.


Later, the Jewish leaders sent some Pharisees {\cf2\super [155]} and some men from the group called Herodians {\cf2\super [156]} to Jesus. They wanted to catch Jesus saying something wrong.


Some Jews there were watching Jesus closely. They were waiting to see if he would heal the man on a Sabbath day. {\cf2\super [41]} They wanted to see Jesus do something wrong so that they could accuse him.


When Jesus was leaving, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees {\cf2\super [220]} began to give him much trouble. They tried to make Jesus answer questions about many things.


So the Jewish leaders waited for the right time to get Jesus. They sent some men to Jesus. They told these men to act like they were good men. They wanted to find something wrong with the things Jesus said. (If they found something wrong, then they could give Jesus to the governor, who had power and authority \{over him\}.)


The men were amazed at his wise answer. They could say nothing. The men were not able to trick Jesus before the people. Jesus said nothing they could use against him.


But don’t believe them! There are more than 40 Jews who are hiding and waiting to kill Paul. They have all promised (vowed) not to eat or drink until they have killed him! Now they are waiting for you to say yes.”
