Lot looked about him and saw that the plain of the Jordan was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar; this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.


He had possessions of flocks and herds and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him.


So his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.


But this is why I have let you live: to show you my power and to make my name resound through all the earth.


Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who is able to stand before jealousy?


Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from one person’s envy of another. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.


For the Lord will comfort Zion; he will comfort all her waste places and will make her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song.


For you shall go out in joy and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.


Your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was perfect because of my splendor that I had bestowed on you, says the Lord God.


Thus says the Lord God: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar; I will set it out. I will break off a tender shoot from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will transplant it on a high and lofty mountain.

Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen, for the glorious trees are ruined! Wail, oaks of Bashan, for the thick forest has been felled!


When Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him.
