And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eli´akim the son of Hilki´ah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Jo´ah the son of Asaph the recorder.


And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? Wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.


And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonished.


Thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,


And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eli´akim the son of Hilki´ah:


Yet I will distress A´ri-el, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as A´ri-el.


Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.


Then said Eli´akim and Shebna and Jo´ah unto Rab–sha´keh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.


Then came forth unto him Eli´akim, Hilki´ah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Jo´ah, Asaph's son, the recorder.


Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.


Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
