Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?


Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelas´ar?


And Hezeki´ah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezeki´ah went up into the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.


Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.


Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.


And when he heard say of Tirha´kah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee; he sent messengers again unto Hezeki´ah, saying,


Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?


And his servants spake yet more against the Lord God, and against his servant Hezeki´ah.


Then sent Sanbal´lat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;


Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.


And Hezeki´ah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezeki´ah went up unto the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.


And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.


And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?


Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
