³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that He did not first wash before dinner.

³⁸ The Pharisee noticed and was astonished [to see] that Jesus did not first wash before dinner.

³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first bathed himself before dinner.

³⁸ When the Pharisee saw that Jesus didn’t ritually purify his hands by washing before the meal, he was astonished.

³⁸ But the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself: "Why might it be that he has not washed before eating?"

³⁸ And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner.

And when יהושע heard, He marvelled, and said to those who followed, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Yisra’ĕl have I found such great belief!

And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him, so He went in and sat down to eat.
