He believes not to return from darkness, and he is reserved for the sword.


Distress and pain frighten him – they overwhelm him, like a sovereign ready for the attack.


He does not turn away from darkness. The flame dries up his branches, and he turns aside by the breath of His mouth.


His strength is starved, and calamity is ready at his side.


They thrust him from light into darkness, and chase him out of the world.

But if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, for they are many. All that is coming is futility.


To Mitsrayim we have given a hand; To Ashshur, to be satisfied with bread.


With our lives we bring in our bread, Because of the sword of the wilderness.


a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the morning clouds spread over the mountains – a people many and strong, the like of whom has never been, nor shall there ever be again after them, to the years of many generations.


Is not the day of יהוה darkness, and not light? Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?


That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and trouble, a day of waste and ruin, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,


but some fearsome anticipation of judgment, and a fierce fire which is about to consume the opponents.
