Nehemiah 13:25 - Revised Standard Version

25 And I contended with them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair; and I made them take oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

So I remonstrated with the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations.


Then I remonstrated with the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing which you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?


and half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but the language of each people.


I also shook out my lap and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not perform this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said “Amen” and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.


I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.


Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, who forsake thy law.


in whose eyes a reprobate is despised, but who honors those who fear the Lord; who swears to his own hurt and does not change;


and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters play the harlot after their gods and make your sons play the harlot after their gods.


Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive against them.


I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting.


You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve him, and swear by his name.


You shall not make marriages with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons.


For if you turn back, and join the remnant of these nations left here among you, and make marriages with them, so that you marry their women and they yours,
