John 18:28 - Revised Standard Version

28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not enter the praetorium, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.

28 The Jewish leaders led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s palace. It was early in the morning. So that they could eat the Passover, the Jewish leaders wouldn’t enter the palace; entering the palace would have made them ritually impure.

When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away to their council, and they said,


Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.


First they led him to Annas; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.


Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. As this disciple was known to the high priest, he entered the court of the high priest along with Jesus,


Pilate entered the praetorium again and called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”


But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover; will you have me release for you the King of the Jews?”


Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.”


Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”


he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer.


and he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit any one of another nation; but God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.


Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter; he is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the seaside.’


saying, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?”


The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.


for truly in this city there were gathered together against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,


And you shall offer the passover sacrifice to the Lord your God, from the flock or the herd, at the place which the Lord will choose, to make his name dwell there.
