2 “Thus says the Lord: Behold, waters are rising out of the north, and shall become an overflowing torrent; they shall overflow the land and all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it. Men shall cry out, and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.

The word which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon to smite the land of Egypt:


“A beautiful heifer is Egypt, but a gadfly from the north has come upon her.


The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame, she shall be delivered into the hand of a people from the north.”


How it is broken! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab has become a derision and a horror to all that are round about him.”


Thus says the Lord: “Behold, a people is coming from the north country, a great nation is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.


“The snorting of their horses is heard from Dan; at the sound of the neighing of their stallions the whole land quakes. They come and devour the land and all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it.


Armies shall be utterly swept away before him and broken, and the prince of the covenant also.


But with an overflowing flood he will make a full end of his adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.


For “the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.”

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.
